I suppose that anything we don't understand can be scary so we close our eyes and jump and hope we can trust the "experts" have our best interest in mind. As we move into more and more fields that can only be understood with a lifetime of study there will be more and more situations when we have no other choice. We stop advancing or we try to create situations where we will be safe moving into new areas.
